Australia zeroes in on Internet Censorship
Internet censorship, idea of blocking access to black-listed sites by implementing a firewall at national level by imposing rules to all the ISP (Internet Service providers ) is now about to get implemented in Australia. The Australian government is planning to do a pilot testing from Christmas Eve, says Epoch times. Kevin Rudd’s Federal government is very particular about this Internet Filtering at national level primarily to safeguard children from Internet and unwanted contents. But ISP’s are not pleased with the government decision and has got raised concerns over speed of the Internet and technical difficulties involved in the filtering.
Anti-Internet censorship campaign like Save the Net and No Clean Feed has already started online considering this censorship as greater threat to democratic values and people are voting to bring it down. NSW Parliamentary Library Research Service with the help of Internet Industry Association has already released a brief report on Internet Censorship and mandatory filtering. Australia is now in the foot steps of China, some middle east countries and is keen in implementing a framework similar to Great Firewall of China. Japan is the next country having plans to implement the censorship. But building a powerful framework like China still remains a question mark keeping the speed of the Internet in mind. Report says this censorship may bring down the Internet speed more than 70%. One can find the Internet Censorship Laws in Australia here published by Electronic frontiers Australia.
