Conficker C variant set to strike on April Fool’s day

Conficket Internet Worm Conficker became famous last year by exploiting the loop holes in the Windows operating system and I wrote a article sometime back in January about Conficker Internet Worm. Security experts around the world has warned that Conficker worm could strike on April 1st, the Fool’s day at all the infected computers. The recent released variant called W32.Downadup.C with increased strengths is set to infect large number of systems across the world and experts has already started taking precautions. The first two variants of the Conficker worm have done enough damage infecting lot of computers across the world before being controlled. The funny thing about the new C variant is, nobody knows what the new Conficker.c is programmed to do.

Conficker worm generally spreads through un-scanned drives and files and mainly through spyware sites. Once the computer gets infected the worm registers itself as a service and stops your anti-virus and windows updates etc. The new variant is even better and capable of blocking security related websites, terminating system security services and downloading component files using time-based generated URLs. All updated anti-virus software must be able to detect this one and the threat can be avoided by keeping all your anti-virus and windows updates up-to-date.

  1. It seems like basic common sense that you shouldn't download or install programs on your computer, then you shouldn't have to worry too much about worms or viruses (like Conficker)
