Yahoo decides to shutdown GeoCities
GeoCities was found way back in 1994 has completed its 15 years run and it about to get retired soon. Yahoo bought GeoCities for more than $2.9bn in 1999 when GeoCities had more than 1.1 million users. Yahoo has disabled the new user signup with GeoCities and existing users has to find an alternative soon.
I am shocked to see the note "We will be closing GeoCities later this year. We’ll provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer." at Yahoo GeoCities page. You can read the official note at Yahoo GeoCities help center. Existing customers can still log into their GeoCities account and Yahoo has just blocked the new users sign-up. The rise of new one-click site hosting services like Ning, Webs, Jimdo, Snapages and increasingly popular blogging platforms such as Wordpress, Blogger, and Typepad has led to the downfall of GeoCities to some extent. Its a real sad news for me as I hosted my first site in GeoCities way back in 2001 during my college days. But Goecities shutdown will not affect much as most of the sites are amateur websites. Its time to say Goodbye to GeoCities.
