Google gives power to the people
Google has been busy for the past one month or so busy introducing new products, making new decisions and announcements. Google today officially announced a new product called Google PowerMeter, now in prototype which helps users to track electricity consumption at their homes or at any place they own. This helps people to know how energy has been utilized and what can be done to be more efficient. A study shows easy access to energy information at ones home in real time results in savings between 5-15% on monthly electricity bills.
Google expects device manufacturers to build advanced electricity meter known as a "smart meter" which works hand-in-hand with Google PowerMeter to provide real-time energy information to customers with ease. Google believes personal energy usage and information should be available to users in a standard, non-proprietary format and Google PowerMeter is an initiative towards that. Google PowerMeter is not yet available to the public and still under testing with Googlers and Google promises to roll out more tool once the tool is publicly available. Also Google is building partnerships with utilities and independent device manufacturers to gradually roll this out in pilot programs. Read more about Google PowerMeter at Official Google blog.
