Google Image Search Optimizing images for Google search is very important for Search Engine Optimization of any website or blog. But lot of us don’t realize how optimization for images can bring in huge targeted traffic to one’s website or blog provided if the images are optimized accordingly. So I am penning down this article which gives few tips about Google Image Search optimization that helps Google to index your images in a better way.

Please read the below to know more about optimization,

  • Google will use the image name in the search results if Google is unable to find suitable text in the page on which image was found. So name your images meaningfully. The image name must be descriptive and must carry a good description of the subject matter of the image. e.g.) lunar-eclipse.
  • Use high quality images and make sure that the image size is not so big and not so small. Google gives priority to high quality images and will rank you well for the appropriate keyword. Also categorizing your images in appropriate categories will help search engines to index well and will also help you to rank better.
  • Don’t forget to include include keywords or description of the image as the alt text in your image tag.  e.g) <img src="descriptive-image-name.gif" alt="keyword or image description">. Do not stuff the alt tag with keywords. Keyword stuffing is highly not recommended. Please see the below video from Matt Cutts about the importance of alt tags,

  • Wrap your images with appropriate context. Make sure the content surrounding the image describes the image well and provides search engines with the appropriate information. Descriptive titles and captions on your images will place you higher up the order in the Google Image Search. Always try to place your images next to relevant content.
  • Use descriptive Anchor text with appropriate keywords and make it more descriptive, and relevant. e.g.) Photos of Holland trip.
  • Enable Google Google Image Labeler in your Google Webmaster Tools. Google may use this tool to associate the images included in your site with labels that will improve indexing and search quality of those images.
  • Tag your images using social tags like Technorati which helps you to rank well for your images in Google Image Search.
  • Add images to your Google Local Business profile and also add images to blog posts or news articles for syndication in Google news.
