Social Networking gets popular and Facebook ranks top, says Nielsen

social-networking How many people are checking their inbox today rather spending on social networking sites first? A survey from Nielsen Online says, 10% of time spent over Internet is spent over social networking sites and blog across the Globe. The research also claims Facebook as the world’s number one social networking site with 108.3 million users followed by MySpace with 81 million users, Classmates online with 19.7 million users and Orkut at the 4th place with 17.5 million users.

John Burbank, CEO of Nielsen Online says,

“Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience. While two-thirds of the global online population already accesses member community sites, their vigorous adoption and the migration of time show no signs of slowing.”.

The survey considers Facebook as the most addicted site with users spending 3hrs and 10min online every month and if you look at the user statistics Google-owned Orkut lags behind with majority of users from India and Brazil. Facebook has majority of users at the age level 35-49 followed by 18-34 as shown in the graph. The staggering survey also shows there is considerable increase in the Facebook users aged 65+.
